That picture looks like something I'd discard when going through a set, I guess I'm not destined to make millions in photography.

that's a girl?? I thought it was a guy wearing an orange shirt and a skirt for some reason.

The previous record holder, "99 Cent II Diptychon" doesn't do anything for me either..

Seriously, does anybody know why this photo was judged as being worth that much?

If I posted that here, it would be torn apart. I mean, maybe if it were someone famous or something . . sorry, not art OR good photography, IMO. Refund? :)

Aesthetic appreciation is pretty much part of the human condition. I don't buy that all that is called "art" is art, but it might be somewhat recognizable. Ultimately, it's "to each his own."

Well thats the thing with photography guys, the one that produces the best looking images doesn't always win.. for example Gary Fong who is a self made millionaire through wedding photography never really was a great photographer, and he will admit that.

Cindy Sherman didn't build a name for herself through the beauty of her photography either, she uses it as a vehicle to commentary on a variety of issues of the modern world, and that is why her photos are so popular.

Eye of the beholder. Who ever bought it felt that 3.9 million was justified :D

I can also see the price as being a more telling point than the picture. To some owning the most expensive of something in the world in itself raises it's value. Again to those who run in those circles of wealth.
