I am rendering "standard" previews on import (default is minimum I believe) and I selected "medium" previews for DNG JPG preview in the preferences. I do convert to DNG on import.

I believe default is "embedded and sidecar." I asked about 1:1 previews because LR does this to me sometimes as well. As soon as the 1:1 previews are loaded, they photos look great.

Give it a try and see what happens.

Just wondering, why are you converting to DNG?

What could cause this dramatic difference?

This maybe?

I would suspect the monitor profile is at fault.

I will change imports to 1:1 and see how that goes.

I convert to DNG for two reasons, first it is about 20% smaller than CR2 files, second in theory it should be more compatible for future use although this is up in the air, the first one is my primary reason.

I know "space is cheap" but I refuse to lose data, so this means I keep three copies of everything, live, backup, offsite. The smaller my data (without loss in quality) the easier it is to backup. I also use top of the line SSD drives and 10K SATA Raptors and they are typically very small compared to regular drives.

I created a calibration using Spyder 3 Elite, it is only a couple weeks old. I can try creating another one.

Color management won't cause the images to be shown soft. Instead of changing your import to 1:1 (it will be significantly slower). Just select a few images you have issues with, go up in the library/previews drop down and render 1:1's. See if it changes anything.

I wasn't expecting to affect the softness, but the fact that the face looks over exposed is my concern, the sharpness is as well but I know that won't be changed with color calibration.
