Okay I have a 70-200 2.8 IS. I have a very sharp version of it also.

This is a sample of it @2.8

Should I upgrade to the mark II version or just buy a canon 50 1.4 or sigma 50 1.4? I'm confused cause I see how much sharper the mark II version is, but I also know I have a really good copy of this lens........

if you're happy with the 70-200 you have, why upgrade? what will you gain from the Mark II?

Sharper and a stop of IS. Which I need for weddings.

Yours is one of the more well thought out list of reasons to upgrade that I've seen lately...

If it's already sharp why upgrade? Maybe you can show a 100% crop if you really want to discuss it's sharpness... But bear this in mind, weddingshoters did just fine with the Mark I before the Mark II came out, so I think you'd manage!? ;)

The version I is a great lens.... you should think about adding a different low light focal length instead.

I don't know your shooting conditions but the lens you already have is a very capable tool. I would say use it to the limit. Make some money and upgrade later when you can honestly say it's not performing at the level you need. I would buy the 50 1.4 or better yet the 50 1.2L if you have money to spend.

As far as the extra stop the new IS gives you, how will it help in a low light wedding situation? The IS will give "you" the ability to be more "steady" but if you are shooting in a low light room/church a faster lens will be the only way to get a better shot. Better IS won't allow you to freeze the action, a faster lens (bigger aperture) will because you can shoot at a faster shutter speed which will give you a sharper image.

When I was trying to decide on the 24-70 vs. 24-105 I went with the 24-70 simply because it's a faster lens. I shoot a lot of events and dark indoor shooting is a situation I find myself working in on a regular basis. No amount of IS will out perform a faster lens in the dark and the use of a flash isn't always possible.

Jon.

If you don't mind me asking, what made you decide to go the 50 1.4 route?

Jon.

Jon.

I did a shoot with my 70-200 2.8 IS today and my 50 1.8. I enjoyed the pictures I did with my 50 1.8 also, I went to the camera store later and tried out the 50 1.4 and like how they came out. Also I can let me wife use it on her 40D while we do weddings. Fast enough for her to not deal with flash lol also I tried the 85 1.8 one of the pictures I took today was very good.
