Been taking B&W with my G3 in RAW. When I upload them to my PC they are colour. What's going on? Still show as B&W on the camera????

I don't know about G3's but all the RAW files I know are .... raw (unprocessed)

On my 20D, the B&W setting is like the sharpness, saturation settings. They only apply to jpegs. The RAW format contains all of the image data including colour. I would assume the same applies to your G3.

dewmuw,

It's much better to convert your colour photos to B&W in GIMP/Photoshop &c. rather than in camera anyway.

Have a look at this thread for tips on the process:

You won't go back to conversion "in-camera" (not that you can when shooting to RAW anyway)

In the Powershot G5 when you are shooting RAW, the "Effects" feature allows you to select B&W.

If you use Zoom Browser EX, then the picture is displayed as B&W and when you save it to TIFF or JPG it is in B&W.

However, if you use Adobe Camera RAW, the thumbnail and the displayed image comes up in color and you have to take steps to desaturate the color to extinction.

Strange, isn't it?
I suspect that the same rules will apply to your G3, but I can't say.

BTW - Raw Shooter Essentials behaves the same as Photoshop - brings it up in color.

As previously mentioned RAW is exactly that raw data, it is not an image, therefore retains all the information including the colour data... If your memory card capacity allows, you could choose the RAW+jpeg, the Jpeg would be in B&W including any filter settings you have dialed in and the RAW would still retain the colour info...
