So...another update just for reference for future searchers. Got my 5Dc back from CPS today (my birthday).

Umm... Happy birthday, I guess? ;)

Well this doesn't sound too good for Canon Irvine. :(

Shutters can go at a couple thousand to hundreds of thousands of actuations. I would NEVER approve a repair estimate to replace a working shutter. They're just plastic blades, and the new one could go before the old one did.

Disturbing to hear that Canon is "recommending" replacement of working shutters though.

+1. When it comes to shutters, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. They can go after 5 shots, or 500,000. "Preventative maintenance" is the same as throwing money down a hole.

So...CPS says they're gonna take a look and see if they caused the problem. I just noticed, after printing their prepaid return label that it's now being sent to the Virginia location instead of California. WISH ME LUCK!

 I can't believe after ALL these years, I finally have a 5D MKII!!! It's glorious! It's MY PRECIOUS!!

Just saying, Canon Irvine is the same place that took my perfectly functioning 50 1.4 for a cleaning, and came back dirtier, with more dust and and repaired only my AF ring, which was ok to begin with. Sent it again because their supposed AF ring fix destroyed my lens prompting me for a 3rd trip in which the whole damn AF assembly was replaced. Now my af ring is looser and not as smooth as before it went in for the cleaning. Then again its tighter than before the 3rd trip.. All this for a $85 "clean"...

Good luck, and some free advice: I think you are being way, way too nice with these folks. Unless I am missing something in the translation this "service" from Canon is utterly ridiculous. If you don't get complete resolution from VA take your complaint up the ladder until someone listens.

You sent the camera in when it actually still worked? I thought the mirror repair was for mirror's that had actually fallen off. So when it was sent in they had to actually take the mirror off and re-glue it back on? That sounds like some labor involved and that is what you sent it in for correct? Sounds like you were charged for a service that they actually had to do a repair on. I never ever send them a camera for a repair that hasn't actually happened yet, if it is still taking pictures and working as advertised why send it in?

a recall is recall, no charge at all, its a precautionary measure for high possibilty of failure. send it in as soon as available. you dnt wana wait that mirror to fall while covering a wedding would you.

It's a voluntary recall, you send it in for the fix at any time, and it's covered.

It would be like Ford saying we won't replace your recalled cruise control switch harness until after your car has burned to the ground.

Or, as in the case where they insisted on replacing the shutter as well, it would be like Ford saying we won't replace your recalled cruise control switch harness unless you also have your transmission rebuilt.
