My daughter makes her 1st Communion in a few weeks time but I thought I'd get her in to the studio this week to get a few shots of her in her new dress. I only have two background, black and white. So which should I use bearing in mind that it's a white dress?

Do I use the black so that the dress stands out against it or use the white and some black reflectors to add some edge separation?

Many thanks in advance

For MY taste, I prefer to do Holy Communion photos on white backgrounds, simply because I like the white on white, and the white is symbolic of light and purity and all that jazz. However, if you don't have the equipment to light the background evenly and get a white WHITE (2 stops brighter than your main), you might consider the black background. I just don't like to see a white dress on a greyish background. Again, that is a a matter of taste, it doesn't much matter which you choose as long you like it. Does your daughter look good on white backgrounds? I've seen some fair haired, pale skinned people who look terrible on white backgrounds, but put them on a darker color and they look great.

If the daughter of Casp3R is anything like her dad's avatar, her skin is really white-white. We could call it almost ghost-like!

But, how's this for a daring idea? Shoot with BOTH backgrounds...

Thanks Sue, always appreciate your feed back. Does my daughter look good on white backgrounds? I don't know, I've gone through my photos of her and they're all against the black lol.

Since this is a pre-Communion shoot I guess alot of experimenting is called for :)

White for me, but you could do almost anything with that: Same white background - different looks (external link)

I would use the black background with a spot.....
I've been doing my hometown church First Communion for about the last 10 years or so and this is typically the 3-light format that I stick to.....
Thinking about adding a 4th next year.....
