Got an extra 18-55 kit lens, could I hack-it-up for use on an EF mount?

Let's take this all with a grain of salt here. I have an 18-55 EF-S that won't mount on my 1D because it's for the crop cameras, a friend gave it to me thinking it'd work on my camera. The idea was to sell it on craiglist, but it has no lens caps, no filter, it has some dust inside that I need to clean out and unless I found someone who doesn't know much about cameras I won't get too much for it. The thought occurred to me, why not hack it up and make it work on my 1D classic? And I searched and found someone who made it work a 10D.

With 1.3 crop it'd be a 23mm, that's still pretty wide for the price of nothing. The plus side to this is having an inexpensive wide angle, but unless it's done right i can say goodbye to my shutter mechanism, which would suck. Would anyone be able to share some insight? Thoughts, suggestions?

I dunno, I'm just house cleaning and wanted to see if this viable or not.

There may be clearance problems with the reflex mirror. Also, vignetting.

It's not worth wasting a shutter if the mods don't go right. Pass it along to somebody in need of a cheap lens.

Jon.

Just throw some extension tubes in front of it, and use it for macro! :p

Hate to break it to you, but a 1D is a crop camera... ;)

looks like the mod's been done a number of times before, see: http://members.cox.net …ller/EFS-WEB/EFS-WEB.html (external link)

I'd be tempted to give the mod a go, but would do a lot of measuring before mounting it so you know what you're up for - you really need to know if you can use the 18mm end properly...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I have a modded 18-55 to use on my D60. Now that I have a 30D and selling the D60 (on ebay right now) I don't need the mod and was thinking of selling it.

I dont think it's worth trying on an old used up kit lens.

You are going to get bad vignetting at the wide end, so not worth the time. Trade it for an old 35-80 or 28-90mm kit lens if you want a crappy lens that will actually work well with the 1D

I did it. 18mm smacks into the mirror (this is on a 1D3) so just avoid the 18mm end, but you can see shading in the viewfinder at that point anyway. 20mm is the widest you can use on 1.3x crop.

I just use a 17-50/2.8 now, and crop, because that lens never covers the entire frame because of a baffle on the back. It's a little wider even after cropping.

EDIT: This is the 18-55 IS, which is probably the only version *worth* modding. The 18-55 regular has such awful corners in comparison, and it doesn't improve much as you stop down. But if you *need* wide...

Well my 28-105 arrived today. I think I'll just sell it.

The 10-22 will mount up to a 1d if you remove the inner rubber piece on the rear mount. IIRC, it's good to 13mm mark. I don't see why this would be different.

I've seen a lot of people do the 10-22 on the 1D. I personally wouldn't do it myself though.
