i might have missed a lens, but these midzooms seem to all be extending lenses ...
24-70L, 24-105L, tamron 28-75, canon 28-135

are there non-extending midzoom lenses?

The hood doesn't move with the lens. This is why its such a deep hood.

except that iirc (i used to have one), it doesn't seem to "telescope out" when zooming in, but when actually going wide

yeah, the lens hood is like a cup, and not really ideal to bring along for travel

was just wondering why there isn't a midzoom that does not extend (unlike the 17-40 and 70-200). i wonder if there's a technical explanation.

for the sake of curiosity if it's possible in this FL range ... which one? :)

the nikon 24-70, 24-85, 24-120's all extend some

I guess if they wanted the zooms to be non-extending, the barrel is going to be huge to accomodate the non-extending zoom mechanism inside. If your objective is to travel light and small, having a huge non-extending barrel lens would defeat its purpose.

yeah, i was wondering why they could do it on the 16-35, 17-40 and 70-200 but not the ones in the thread title. (even the ef-s lenses of the equivalent range extend)

+1

the 24-70 has an awesome hood design. it's size is "fixed" relatively speaking..

You have a choice... top image quality, good close focus ability and an extending lens barrel. Or you can compromise on image quality, close focus ability, lens size and weight... but get an IF/internally zooming lens.

Compare a Canon 100mm Macro lens, which is Internal Focusing, with a non-internal focusing lens of similar focal length (perhaps the Tamron 90mm, Tokina 100mm or Sigma 105mm macros).... The IF lens is much bigger and heavier.

WIth a zoom it's even worse... since you have two separate groups of optics that need to move around inside the lens.

Plus a lens that goes from wide to standard to short telephoto is probably about the hardest to design and maintain top optical quality. A tele to tele like the 70-200 or wide to wide like a 16-35 or 17-40 is a lot easier to design and build compact.

You can reverse the 24-70s lens hood for storage while travelling. It really doesn't take up any additional space.

The extending lens barrel of the 24-70 doesn't create any balance issues. This was a major problem with some big tele lenses in the past... They could get unbalanced on a tripod and tip over! The early non-IF version of the Tamron SP 300/2.8 manual focus lens was one of those. Subsequent versions were all IF.

my concerns
1) lens creep
2) dust
3) aesthetics
4) curiosity on why noone makes one. (length restriction?)

lens hood, price, size out of the picture.

i'm curious about this:
16-35 f/2.8 EF lens does not extend
17-5* f/2.8 APS-C lens extends
(on a crop body, these two have similar FL)

it looks to be doable
