what a fascinating area. looking NNE & ENE from your coordinates, there are gold/opal mines, ghost towns, and lots of air-force bases - mocks for bomb testing?

Good morning, everyone.

For reasons I won't bore any of you with, we had to go to Northern California yesterday. We gut up at 1:00am, left here at 3:00am, got up there around 10:30am, saw all the people and did all the things we were there for, and headed home around 3:00pm. We unloaded back here at about 10:30 last night. Total driving time, 19 1/2 hours, distance traveled, 1050 mile.

I am tired.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Randsburg is pretty close to Red Rock. That's one of the more famous ghost towns in the Mojave desert. I've spent a lot of time there. It's pretty much deserted during the week, but it's a very popular destination on weekends. Especially with off-road people.

And, yeah, there's a HUGE base (Navy, I think, not Air Force) to the northeast. They blow a lot of stuff up out there.

Back when I was in the ordnance business, I used to have to go to China Lake from time to time. You're right. We blew lots of stuff up, but it was miniscule compared to some of the things they set off up there.

I've always wondered how they would possibly reclaim that land if they ever decide not to use it as an ordnance test range. There has to be tons and tons of unexploded ordnance up there.

Yeah, it can take a long tim to recover property like that. We have a place up here that they have kept closed to the public for decades.

Long road trip in such a short time. I'm headed down to MO tomorrow, same thing but not as long. Just under 600 miles.

Heh! The drive up isn't so bad, it's just doing the late drive back that can be the headache!

I've also heard that there's an area in China Lake that has tons of petroglyphs. It's the only place on the base where the general public is allowed, but you have to make arrangements in advance, and a military escort/tour guide goes with you.

It isn't just because of the military being secretive. It's also for your own protection. That really is a place you don't want to go wandering off by yourself... They lob missiles and stuff into that piece o' property... ;)

Ahhh, good point. I had the military escort in Nigeria for other reasons. So you didn't get taken hostage/car jacked/robbed at gunpoint. When we landed at Lagos, we would be greeted by the security group, and if we felt that they didn't have enough ammunition, we would tell them to return back with more (this was done on numerous occasions). Then they would come back, 3 vehicles for people. Vehicle 1 had security people with the biggest machine guns i've ever seen, vehicle 2 held us, vehicle 3 had our bags :D:D

we were "held" up, but apparently the militants knew the security people, so they let us go...hahaha...yeah, not good!!

But then we had to go to the Niger Delta region, which is absolutely notorious for kidnappings etc. Mostly for political reasons and they ask for ransoms off the big petro-chem companies. But there are stories I know of other issues out there :D:D
