It's one of my favorite panos (one of my first, too). I love how small the cars look against the rocky peaks. My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

Yep, it was a great little camera! That's why I still have it, though it's now been converted to permanent infrared. The 28-135 was a great lens, too, but unfortunately I don't have that any more. I sold it in late 2004 or early 2005 and have wished I could have it back ever since then. My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

I loved that combination. I cut my DSLR teeth on it, and frequently promise myself to go shooting with it again, if for no other reason than nostalgia. I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

That's one of the more famous ghost towns in the Mojave desert. I've spent a lot of time there. It's pretty much deserted during the week, but it's a very popular destination on weekends. Especially with off-road people. And, yeah, there's a HUGE base (Navy, I think, not Air Force) to the northeast. They blow a lot of stuff up out there. Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake Belmondo wrote in post #12603727 Back when I was in the ordnance business, I used to have to go to China Lake from time to time. You're right. We blew lots of stuff up, but it was miniscule compared to some of the things they set off up there. I've always wondered how they would possibly reclaim that land if they ever decide not to use it as an ordnance test range. There has to be tons and tons of unexploded ordnance up there. The southern end of San Clemente Island off the southern California coast is a shore bombardment range for the Navy. When the range isn't hot, civilian boats are allowed into the area for diving and fishing. (They can't land on the island because it's Navy-owned.) I've been diving in there several times, both for the Navy and as a civilian. The biggest rule of thumb was if you saw anything that looked even remotely like a bomb or shell, don't touch it... John

My little old 30D sits around here to this day with the 28-135 attached to it and the combo occasionally sees use by someone, no shame Tony

It is a pretty cool place to visit and hike. It's quite a bit north of where you're thinking, though. Red Rock is more than 200 miles north of Joshua Tree. It's in the high desert about halfway between Mojave and Ridgecrest. My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

Ah well I guess that would be why we didn't frequent it -- we'd hit Death Valley occasionally, Salton Sea occasionally, but I don't remember going that way. We'd spend time in the mountains as well, places like Arrowhead in the SB mountains, but also some fine times in the Sierras. Tony
