Oh, and the fact that you call it Jam, and not this "Jelly" nonsense give you bonus points :D

It's the European influence :)

Jelly is runny stuff, usually occurs when a batch of jam doesn't set right

Absolutely, John. Usually they are good for universities, municipals and medical centres.

EMCOR have a lot of experience with Solar turbines, and they usually team up with us for nice little filler projects.

The last full time job I had before I retired was with Solar Turbines...

Hey gang, checking in -- I've been too busy to keep up with things!

I missed the biking discussion yesterday -- I don't have much to contribute at this point about the "serious biking" that you all do...but I am having fun with the photo-biking thread so thanks for those of you who have been checking it out and chiming in:)!

Omar, if you can think of a good name for a sharing thread, we just need to think of a sharing section where it would "fit"...then we need folks to buy in to contributing!

Well, that's all for now, folks -- I'm settled in for the rest of the day!

Oh, and another conversation I missed from yesterday -- Chief's comments on the heat in the Cali desert area (and the A/C stuff)!

Well, it brought back memories of the summer of '03. My mom had just passed away and the extended family had all come to town for the memorial, which we held at my parents' home (my dad was still living -- he passed two years later). Their home was in Whittier, CA, about 20 miles East of downtown LA.

My folks had decided that they wanted to be cremated. The got a cemetery plot to "share", putting their ashes together in it, so all was ready and waiting.

But my sister, who had come in from Denver, got the idea that our mom would appreciate having at least some of her ashes scattered in one of the favorite family places to camp and have fun in, Joshua Tree (in the High Desert part of the Mojave Desert).

So, my sister's family and I set out to Joshua Tree. We noted that as we entered the park entrance it was 112 degrees F, but didn't give it a lot of notice.

We came to a parking place by one of the rock hills that are all over the place there -- our idea was to climb up to a spot where there was a breeze so that we could actually scatter the ashes rather than just dump them onto the desert floor, and so we set off uphill, and man! Rock hill climbing at 112 degrees? You gotta be kidding! Heat stroke a distinct possibility, maybe? Wow!

Well, we made it up to a boulder/cliff overlooking the scene, and did the deed, and, well, it definitely made for a memory!

And, I took a few pics with my old HP super-zoom compact digicam -- here's a nice one of my niece:

On the way back, we decided to stop in Palm Springs for a meal. We went to a place that had an outdoor seating area that fortunately was cooled with mist sprayers!

On the way out of PS, the sun was setting and as we were passing the wind mills I insisted my brother-in-law pull over so I could take this shot (I've posted it before but it's part of the memory/story):

So, blah blah, hot summer days, hot sumer nights!

Took Phoenix to the lake for his second swim. He's definitely loving the water!

Headed right into the water after us.

Right there with you Tommy. We're supposed to really start to cook around that same time... :( Not really ready for summer yet.

Sorry to have been scarce but I've been closeted with CS5 trying to learn to apply some new tricks learned at our aviation photography symposium in San Diego. One in particular that's be bedeviling me is Luminosity Masks Vs Layer Properties and I think I've had a "Eureka" moment tonight.

This is SOOC

IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/v26/p942629753.jpg

This is Treated
IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/v25/p787764760.jpg

The "Ah Ha!" came when I realized that CTL + CLICK on the RGB channel yields a selection of everything that's 50% and brighter in luminance. You can then drop that over your image as a mask using any adjustment that you want. Doing the same thing and then pressing CTL + SHFT + "I" inverts the selection to everything that's 50% and darker! Again, drop it on as a mask with whatever adjustment property you'd care to give it.

Now the fun starts, choose a layer and give it a different Layer Property. In this case, 50 and up got "Soft Light" and 50 and down got "Mulitply." Then, just go in with a very soft brush and remove the masking over the highlights you want to restore and POOF! Instant "Pop!" In this case, I brushed over the leading edges, the cowling edges, inside the cowls so you can see the engines, the edges of the oil cooler intakes (little rectangles across the wing), the landing lights, the faces of the pilots and some of the details in the nose.

Amazing Stuff...!
