Well, thanks, Tom -- it was a rescue job -- sometimes there is no "right" exposure except for an "ugly" exposure:)!

True. That's why I shoot RAW. It's the best chance for making something out of nothing.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

It sure it. Well done, Tony. You must pay a lot of attention to your own thread about the BEFORE/AFTER RAW processing.

I am still an utter noob when it comes to PPing. I have no idea about curves and using them etc. But I get by :D

Hi tuppers.

Yesterdays ride didn't go as well. Mayra ended up crashing and landed on her left shoulder, left chin, and cheek. ..

OUCH!! I hope things are better today, though usually the day after is when everything gets really sore.

How many piles of cars are there on the side of the road after the pink elephant? :D:D

Their attention getting device worked well. When we were there there were maybe 10~15 other cars as well. They had several BIG things besides the elephant.

Hi tuppers.

Yesterdays ride didn't go as well. Mayra ended up crashing and landed on her left shoulder, left chin, and cheek. We werent going fast and thank the lord nothing was broken. She ended up with 7 stitches on her chin. 2 internal and 5 external. Her cheek is swollen but getting better and will go down with ice. Scrapes on her shoulders knee and chin are looking better. The crash happened around noon. Spent 5 hours in the hospital in riverhead then rushed over in a cab to Montauk. Then the bus back home at 9pm it's a long story with more details than this but if you were wondering why no update from me it was because of this. She is doing well under the circumstances of yesterday.

Sorry to hear about her accident. I hope she heals quickly.

Ok I need a little inspiration :)

Today I was at the sixth lesson on the photoeducation and since we now have approx 2 month summer holliday we got a couple assignments to do during summer.

First one we have to shoot 3 photos of 3 different persons. One that we think is beautifull, one we think is not so beautifull and one that is different. Max focal length 50 mm on ff and face must fill 2/3 of frame heigth. Now that task is pretty straight forward just a bit scary because the last requirement is that we must not know any of the 3 people!

Second assignemt and here I have no ideas so could do with some inspiration. We have to shoot people in an environment. Series of 10 to 15 photos telling a story. Same requirements as the first. I have no idea. Had we gotten this assignment 10 days ago I could have worked it into the carnival. But rigth now I draw a blank :(

That portrait assignment sounds like a real challenge. 50mm on full frame is a bit short for a portrait lens, especially since you're constrained to having the face fill 2/3 of the frame.

Traditionally, the preferred focal length for head shots on FF (35mm size frame) has always been between roughly 70mm and 90mm. You could push it to 100mm, but after that the persons feature begin to flatten out. Anything shorter than 50mm and severe distortion starts showing up.

Hey gang!

The extended family descended on my home to give me a nice Father's Day -- my son Josh, my Daughter Rebekah, and even my ex-wife Debbie -- they took me out to eat, my daughter did house-cleaning, you know, stuff.

Now toward the end of the day as it was moving in the direction of sunset, my son, Debbie and I stopped at a park. I had grabbed my backpack with my "lightweight" camera combo (the 5DC and the 24-105) so we went to the best setting we could find to take pictures. But, the light was behind the "subjects" -- don't you hate it when that happens? And, because I was going lightweight, I didn't have a flash!

I personally have an abhorrence with blowing out a sky! So, with this type of thing I do a few exposures and pick and choose (I haven't been inclined toward HDR lately) and then crank things in Lightroom.

So, just to show you what I had to deal with and the fun I had, here's a Before and After Lightroom comparison.

First, see the "character" in the sky I was trying to keep, despite the very dim foreground lighting:

http://www.pbase.com/image/135725645/original.jpg (external link)

So, serious cranking and I managed to get some of the sky OK and the subjects (Josh and Debbie) OK:

Now I know that much more fancy work can be done with layers, masks, etc, but this was a quick in-and out thing so I guess I'm satisfied...

A technique I use in situations like this is to utilize Auto Exposure Bracketing and High-Speed Continuous drive. With both of these activated, the camera will shoot only three bracketed frames. The high speed drive allows for minimal subject or camera movement when handholding and you have three bracketed frames to use to create one HDR image.

Yes but see our teachers point with this exercise is to force us to interact closely with our subjects. I can easily do this with people I know but doing that with a stranger will be the real challenge.

Go to a local busy place (market, etc) with a sign that says "Free Portraits". Get a few people to pose for you, then email them some nice web-sized copies. :)

^Melody, you didn't read his assignment:

You cannot just have 3 adverts for "Good looking people free portrait shots only", then "Ugly people, sign up here for a photoshoot", and those in between :D

Secondly, I understand what would be needed for the 2nd assignment, meaning a story. You would need to be involved with a group of people. Be this in a homeless shelter, take photos of 10-15 homeless people, and there will be a totally different story to each one of them, from unemployed and lost their house, to the total smackheads who don't care. Something like that in my mind at least. I did say nurses - plenty of them, lots of different wards in hospitals, thus lots of different stories from rehab down to A&E. A flowing story.

Oh you didn't see it? You asked a couple days ago about the one I started which waded into my biking and using it for photography experiences -- read a ways down it and we get into discussing the idea of a dedicated biking-photography sharing thread:
