I know our cable smokes the local DSL provider here in the greater PHX area Tony...

Phooey! I forgot they were on this afternoon... :(

Sounds like I should be glad I missed it though.

Yeah, the DSL alternative to Cox Communications is JUNK! You could check if you have Vios available in your area, or some other fiber network :)

As for the D-backs, I didn't see the game, but just watched the score. 3-0 after 3... they lost 12-4

We're on Time-Warner, and we just went through the downsizing of our cable package. (No more HBO, Showtime, or Movie Channel), and we knocked our bill down from about $180 to around $140.00

I'm told (but haven't confirmed) that DSL is not available here, but from what I know of it, I wouldn't be much interested. A lot of people in our area have been signing up for Verizon FIOS, and we almost did, but chased the installers away on the day it was supposed to be hooked up. Turned out the salesman forgot to include a few things in his quote of the monthly payment, and it would have ended up costing more than we're currently paying TW.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I thought anywhere where you have a phone line, you can have DSL. DSL is just using the unused bandwidth of your phone line

I think though, for it to be truly effective, you have to be within X feet of the nearest hub.

It's distance dependent.

I'm hoping to find a job so that I don't have to chop my internet... :( I can't get digital cable without hiring an electrician to come 'ground' my cable... which is going to be a PITA! And isn't happening anytime soon... several complicating reasons beyond just paying an electrician...

Yes... yes it is! ;)

It might work better if you lick someone elses hand, then let a third person smell it. That makes it a lot more objective.

*shudder* I'll pass!

Hey, Omar. How does your hand smell?

Well I play two-pitch so the game moves a lot faster. We do sweat when it's hot and humid

Don't know what two pitch is but I live in the land of hot and humid summers... standing still can cause one to sweat some days!

From what I can gather, the distance is quite far but the service degrades significantly after 3 miles from a repeater. After 7 miles smoke signals work better.

My neighbor works for the local DSL provider....We are within 200 yards of the pertinent equipment....he can connect almost 50x faster by logging into my wireless network. Supposedly, there is some new technology going online in a month or so that is supposed to make a dramatic difference in DSL speed here, but I think I'll stick with my 50 mb cable connection.

Most DSL providers have been moving over to fiber for their high end connections.

Just like with everything else though, It's the connection to the house that's going to govern your speed. The network might be blazingly fast but you are stuck on the on-ramp.

Yeah, but with fiber they would really have to upgrade your connection to your house. Everyone I know on fiber (fios and the like) get insane speeds so clearly that isn't too much of an issue.

With FIOS, it's still gonna be dependent on what tier of service you want to pay for though, no? I thought residential is still throttled to 15 mbits down and 5 up.
