Yesterday while shooting an event my 7D didn't seem to make the changes I wanted or at least the ones dealing with the view finder.

I could change my exposure controls, but when I wanted to turn off the grid in the viewfinder. No luck. I was at the correct tab. since it's one of those things I change depending on my mood. I'd make the change go back and look through VF and still there. even tried changing it to number 2 grid. no luck

Same thing for Focus Point. Switched to expanded and only would see the main point in the VF . I could still easily change which one. but in the past I would see the expanded one, but not this time

Is this something that I should just go under the restrore factory settings or how ever that tab is worded. Just take out the batteries for a bit??

Were you shooting in like C1/C2/C3? Registered settings will stay the same even after you change it. Well, you can change it briefly but as soon as the camera goes into sleep mode and is woken back up, it reverts.

This tells me you don't know what you are doing. ;)

The 4th red tab is specifically for the Live View feature. This tab shows Grid #1 and Grid #2 (or no grid) during Live View ONLY. The viewfinder grid overlay is turned on and off at the second yellow tab: "VF Grid Display." It is either on or off, you have no choice as to which grid you see.

As for the expanded AF point, the expanded points only display for a short amount of time, then the main point is displayed alone. The expanded points will also pop up if they are actively being used by the camera (main point lost focus) AND this feature is enabled under CFn:3-10.

Well, assuming you have made it possible to select them, then the expansion points are shown as small dots around the main one, until focusing is carried out. Then only the point(s) that found focus are shown.

thanks for the tips. :)

Hmm... I think I was under the correct tab the first couple of times I tried it then. since when I found the grid #2.. I just figured I was under the wrong tab the first time. But I think your initial thought might be dead on :)

for the expanded-- I never saw the expanded points when I started tracking like I have in the past, however now that you said that.. I'm thinking that since the majority of shots were runners/bikers coming directly at me and where I was set up I'd pretty much get my photo at the same spot distance wise each time.. Hmm. So maybe it's that the main point just never lost focus. the main thing was that everything was in focus. at the end of the day

thanks

 With expanded AF, the main point has to lose focus or at least need assist from a surrounding point for it to pop up. Every once in a while, I'll get two points to show up in this mode.

Zone AF will show however many points are working at that time. Its common to have 3 or 4 depending on focus location and DOF.

I hope that helps ;)
