I would like to ask you people who have the Canon A630 a question. I bought the A630 yesterday and my wife tells me there is a problem with it. Here is her concern ......! The zoom lever works fine so far as I can see and the shutter release also works. Her concern is the zoom lever has free play in it. The lever can be moved left or right 1/16" before the zoom activates. Not a real issue for me so long as it does not break. Can you people who have the A630 tell me if your cameras have the same free play as mine. My wife insists I send the camera in for repair and I will feel quite stupid if this is the way the camera is normally. I can not return the camera as I bought it from a going out of business sale. All sales final!

Thanks for any help with this matter!

My old A590 has the same behaviour and it's been fine for a few years now.

Well, my A630's switch (bear in mind this is a 2006 camera, and been used in and out of an underwater housing since then) has more than 1/16" play. My newer SD990 and SX1 also have some play. Bear in mind that this is an electrical switch; if it started zooming the lens the instant you touched it, you'd be zooming all over the palce and going slightly crazy trying to get the right framing.
