No, the 300 just doesn't have that much behind the tripod mount, but then I noticed it was a 2x extender.

f4.5 and f4 make a difference in girth!

It is gonna have to be long still unless it uses detractive optics, it is gonna be larger than the 400 f.56 as well which is larger than the 70-200 f4 I believe?

Yeah, those big primes play well with the 2x. It was a pretty standard combo for me when I went out birding -- sometimes nice and close, even with the 5D:

actually its ok as long as its light weight not 3KG hehe...
