Looking for input about an upcoming open house that an artist friend of mine and I are having. He is an oil painter and his gallery is just down the hall (located in a former high school), so we decided to promote and have an open house, give discounts, etc....generally our goal is to just make people in the area more aware of our existance.

We'll both want to play background music in our galleries while visitors pass thru...I was thinking of just using my iPod which I can dock on my stereo...my question is what type of music would be suitable/appropriate...not sure since there will probably be a wide range of ages attending.

What Svetlana said, but also consider your audience and any specific culture that your photos may attract. For instance, Jazz doesn't go very well if you are exhibiting mainly sports photography.

My target audience will most likely be people looking for Wedding photography, Family, tween or baby/children or High school senior portraits.

A mix of classical and jazz would do best - no lyrics.

Agreed, instrumental jazz seems to be a staple of the arts.

I'm not sure the middle eastern flavor of some of the tracks would go over well depending on how xenophobic the attendants might be.

Rarely you'll find artists xenophobes.

Buddha Bar music is not Middle Eastern music. Very few Buddhists (if any) live in the Middle East.

Yes, it's all around the world, every civilization and culture is included, that is why artists love it.

Artists aren't usually xenophobes, but some of the people interested in purchasing their art or artistic services might be.

Go to local Starbucks, ask them what music CD they are playing, proceed to buy said CDs.

There's a reason why Starbucks are so successful and it is naive to think coffee is the key. ;)
