Hi everyone -

This type of thread may be better suited to a backpacking forum rather than a photography forum, but I figure we photographers have some specialized needs so I thought I'd give it a shot here.

For those of you who pack in everything you need for several days at a time, what does your gear list look like? What tips for reducing weight/increasing comfort do you have? Anything specific to photographers? I'd love to cut some weight using creative solutions so I could justify bringing my 055xProB tripod, but as it is I'd just rather leave that monster at home. Also, include some info about the terrain and climate in which you hike as well.

Ill start off - I do most of my hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota. The terrain is rugged with many ups and downs, but the elevation is never high enough to worry about elevation sickness or lack of oxygen. I usually hike most in the spring and fall so temps range from 25F at night to 55F during the day. Water is usually flowing freely at many places on the trail.

not photography specific, but i noticed you smoke. hopefully you are not leaving your butts on the trail. if so, you might consider investing in a pocket ashtray if you haven't already.

Actually, for the past several years Ive managed to cut my smoking back to only when I'm having a drink - which only happens around the campfire and not on the trail. But, I pick up any I see from others and burn them when I get to camp.

I could probably cut out 1 pack of smokes since I only need two packs to bum them out to friends who "dont smoke"...
