So I sent my 24-105L in to Canon the other day. My Red ring broke off about a year or two ago. I had Canon on the phone for a different question the other day and decided to ask how much I could get a red ring for.

They told me the red ring on this specific lens is a shock absorber and keeps things from hitting where the front assembly separates. Apparently this is an important part of the front of this lens and not just decoration. The front of the lens needs to come off to get the ring back on so I figured let me send it to them and get an estimate.

I just got the estimate. $143 AFTER my 20% CPS discount!!!!

The part was $19 and the rest is labor to get the ring back on. A "cleaning and calibration" is included.

Unbelievable!

$19 for the part, and $124 for knowing where to put it.

Red rubber band. $0.02 fix ;)

If it really was such an important part, wouldn't your lens have died in those 1-2 years without it?

Hahaha...too true :D

OP: That sounds crazy, to me. I hope my ring doesn't fall off :s

I can't imagine the ring is a weather seal of any kind either. It just seems to be hard plastic.

Gonna buy a 50mm f/1.8 and send it in to have the red ring added. Brand New L lens for under $300! Now, that's a deal :D

Do that a few times... always getting the 50 1.8 and then selling it as a 50L.
You'll be rich in no time!

And I thought I was the only believer!;)

The red rings also stop the magic PIXIES from escaping!

That sounds pretty fair to me.
You pay to have things done that you either do not have time to do or cannot do. I am sure to disassemble a camera lens, repair it, clean it, and put it back together requires special skill and expensive tools.
