How do I enable focus assist while disabling flash function?

There are 2 ways to turn off the slave function of the 430EX II:

1) Just mount the flash on your EOS camera and turn it on. The Canon software knows the flash is on the camera and automatically turns off the slave function.

2) Press and hold the "Zoom" button on the flash to turn on or off slave functions. (page 26 in the 430EX II manual)

I think it's also one of the custom functions (can't remember which). You can choose to have the AF-assist beam fire with the pop-up flash, only on the hotshoe flash, or no AF-assist at all.
