What's the "Auto Power Off" setting in the menu set at? Page 50 of the manual.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

I know I have drained the battery on my 40D by having it set to continous review. Though the camera was set of auto power down after 15 minutes or so, I had reviewed a shot on the card and then walked away from it on the tripod. Well it did its duty and held that shot on review till the battery drained dead.

On another unrelated but similar situation I used my 430EX flash with a new set of batteries and after a short time it went into sleep mode with the camera. I then later had a need to take a pic without the flash so I popped the flash off the camera, placed it on a shelf and went about my business with the camera. A couple days later I wanted to use the flash again but the batteries were flat dead. I had naturally forgotten to switch it off.

Do you have a grip fitted by any chance?

Some years ago my 20D with grip fitted would suck up battery power over night.

Well, I was not able to reproduce the failure. I left the camera on, and 24 hours later, and 36 hours later, the battery indicator shows Full. Go figure!

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I sent mine to Canon because a Canon technician told me that it shouldn't drain the battery. I had an internal flash issue as well so i will see whether these 2 issues are somehow related. Camera is now being fixed.
