I am experiencing the back-button AF focusing and found when I check the AL point in the DPP, there is no red box to tell me which AF point is in the shoot. Is this normal or I have done something wrong?

I think you need to hold the AF button down when you fire the shutter.

But isn't this the idea of back-button focusing to release your finger from AF focusing and just keep shooting?

It depends on the persin, but when i use it, i always hold it down whether i use one shot Or ai servo. I only release it after the shot. It just became a habit i guess.

Again, yes. My 50D will show the AF point(s) in DPP or on the LCD display with back button focus only if I hold the AF-ON button while I press the shutter. If using the 7D, it will show the point(s) regardless of whether pressure is kept on the AF-ON button.

With One shot DPP should show the point . With Servo I didn't think my 30D did, my 7D I think shows it if the button down at time of exposure.

Actually, recalling from my memory, i thibk you have to have the back button pressed at the time of pressing the shutter for thebaf point to show up in dpp whethet its one shot or ai servo. I have to check my files to confirm

How about you do this test, enable the af point in camera, take a pic and review it. If theres a red square showing up, then it should also show up in dpp.

Just tested this with my 7D, and the results are...odd.

One-shot:
AF-On button held: DPP shows the focus point
AF-On button released: DPP does not show the focus point

AI SERVO:
AF-On button held: DPP shows the focus point
AF-On button released: DPP still shows the focus point...This is what I find odd.

Follow-up: Same test with the 40D

One-shot and AI SERVO:
AF-On button held: Focus point is shown in DPP
AF-On button released: Focus point NOT shown in DPP

No guys...jesus. With back button focusing, if you let go it acts as though you were in One Shot mode and stops focusing, if you keep it held it will continue to look for focus like AI Servo.

Before getting exasperated, read back through the thread and understand what we're discussing.

We know the in-camera behaviors; we're talking about whether DPP *shows* the AF point or not.

Maybe the 7d takes a second longer to stop focusing when the button is released thats why the camera still think its focusing and register the af point? How long have u released the button before you took the shot?

Long enough to take out the CF card, review a picture, put the card back in the camera and take a new shot without touching the AF-On button at all. Still shows the AF point in DPP. Nice, but odd.
