Just tested this with my 7D, and the results are...odd.

One-shot:
AF-On button held: DPP shows the focus point
AF-On button released: DPP does not show the focus point

AI SERVO:
AF-On button held: DPP shows the focus point
AF-On button released: DPP still shows the focus point...This is what I find odd.

Thank you so mcuh for the testing, I will try it out myself to see what best works for me...

I've just been noticing this behaviour on my 7D, and it acts as has already been noted.

Basically, in one-shot focusing mode, with back button focusing, it's possible to focus, release the back button, then take the shot, without moving the camera (say, on a tripod) and the focus point *will not be recorded*.

If you take the shot with the back button focus held down, the AF point *will* be recorded - even though in single shot mode, holding the focus button has no effect once we've locked focus.

In AI servo mode, the focus point won't flash when it's acquired focus, but the AF point locked will be recorded *regardless* of whether the back button was held or not.

Basically, it seems that in single shot mode, if you BBF, then let it go and take the shot, or recompose, the AF point will not be recorded into the image, and will not be displayed in camera (if you have that feature turned on) or DPP.

I assume the camera is designed to think that, if you focus in single shot mode, but release the focus button before taking the shot, it assumes we've lost focus, or haven't focused for this shot and doesn't record the point, even though that may not be the case.

It's just how it behaves, I guess...

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!
