Howdy all, kind of new around here but have been lurking for quite some time. I picked up a T3i in the beginning of April and have been playing ever since. My netbook has burnt a hole in my lap and my earbuds have applied for residency in my ears after watching as many Youtube videos and podcasts as I could. Well, I found strobist.com and pretty much love it. I found a good deal on a couple of flashes, a 580EX and a 580EXII, and a ST-E2, along with some other goodies. Well I started playin with the flashes off camera (no stands yet) while taking some pics of the sunset and Old Glory in my front yard. THougth that I would post them to see what kind of things anyone had to say about them. I did do a little post in LR3. just a little crop and touchups. My ears are open. Thanks..

Sac

The upper part works very well. However, at the base the use of flash just becomes a little too obvious for my taste.

So how would one go about disguising the flash for the lower part? Use an umbrella or something?

Nope, you need to flag it (no pun intended) use a bit of cardboard, or better yet a sheet of black craft foam and use a rubber band around your flash to attach it. Let it extend above the flash on the side you want to block. Any light hitting the pose is going to be obviously flashed, but its less obvious if it hits only the upper part.

The telephone lines/wires in the background are killing me, but I really like how you lit the top part of #1. That really catches my eye!
