Yeh, that's what it cost me to get a couple of portraits of what I think is really a magnificent bird. I'll admit they aren't very colorful but there is just something about them that I really like. Maybe it's their impressive size, perhaps it is their racious call or maybe it's simply because for a bird that is really plentiful I, over a period of 3 years, have found them cunning, sly, elusive and hard to approach and get close to. That is until this morning. I put out the usual amount of nuts and seeds grabbed a cup of tea and checked my email. About 10 minutes later enroute to the kitchen I noticed at least a fourth of the normal daily amount of peanuts was already gone. I got another cup of tea and the camera and went to the blind and suddenly this big fella silently glided in and began devouring nuts.

I know there are a lot of readers that won't agree with me but I was really grateful for this opportunity to be really close (too close for body shots) to a really awesome bird. He can come back anytime, it was well worth the pound of peanuts!

They are very intelligent birds. The mocking birds don't care too much for them when they take their babies from the nest and gobble them down. I've always liked them though.

Our residents Ravens here kill crows. In 20 years living here, there has never been a crown on our property, but directly down the road, they are lined up ion the power lines..very odd.
Crows are the 8th most intelligent beast on the planet!
Like that las tone.

Thanks KP. Isn't something always eating someone elses babies? I don't let natures ways influence me as to what I like or don't like.

Thanks Flo. I have lived here for 11 years and never had one land in my yard let alone on a perch. I have heard them in the woods nearby and once in a while caught a glimpse of one flying past but never stopped by. Our lake area is full of them and you would think with the amount of people always there they wouldn't be so jumpy but they never let anyone approach or land near someone.

Thanks Sharon, I'm sure you wouldn't have any trouble finding someone to send you a few.

Thanks Drama!

I love the Crows, too. I had a great time with one the other day, tossing him nuts while I was "paying" the Jays to come over. They definitely have character :) These are some really nice shots.

Great story and shots Mike... the crows and ravens around here are quite illusive and difficult to capture, so I applaud your efforts... you may have him eating out of your hand soon ;)
