Well, that's a thought -- it would work as an extra tool for me to play with, but my daughter may not do so well without Lightroom and Photoshop and such -- she doesn't do so well with new learning curves!

Well, I wouldn't expect a whole lot of PP out of a 1.3GHz Celeron.

FYI, there are programs out there (one being Dreampackpl) that will allow you to bypass the login password, or change it without needing to know the original. Needs to be run from a bootable media (usually Linux or Windows PE).

You were fortunate that the drive still had the hidden reinstallation partition. Even if you could have boot to your Windows XP reinstallation DVD you had for another computer, it prob would not have allowed you to install it since those disc are coded for specific laptops/desktops (OEM) - you actually didn't specify whether it was a retail DVD or an OEM reinstallation that came with another computer.

Yeah I'm fortunate that I stumbled on the Ctl-F11 "secret" -- otherwise I couln't get the dang thing to recognize my bootable CD and couln't find a way of getting to the BiOS.

Well, this afternoon was hectic! After spending the one day and evening getting it all set up, I took a break for the morning and then the extended family swarmed on me. My daughter had the task og going through piles of assorted gadgets that she I and probably others had lying around, looking for things that she needed (a card reader and a working mouse) as well as other things I had given to her that could be useful, and she was stressed about that. In the meantime I realized that seemingly all the mice laying around had been discarded for one reason or another so three of us headed out to a nearby Best Buy -- another $18.00 to the $60 cost, and we'll be needing a battery at some point, but still less than $100 so far...

And then there was the CS3 install. At one time I ran my two legit copies of CS2/CS3 off my tower workstation and of a big high-powered laptop/portable workstation, and all was good, but a couple years ago the laptop just died. It made a couple attempts to come back to life but then finally quit even trying.

Since then I've had the one copy of CS3 on my workstation and aside from that I've been through a couple cheap little laptops but not wanted another $2k machine for "serious" stuff so I've never tried to re-install CS3 on one...until today. Ran the downloaded file which did the install, and then politely informed me that I had met my limit of registered, activated copies, and I'd have to contact Adobe to deactivate one of my copies. Dang. It was too late in the day and too hectic here with a houseful so I sent them packing until later. My daughter at least is up with Lightroom, she has her photo gear, I figured she is good for the next day or two...

And then I did a bit of messing around -- we had to scrounge to find her a card reader and then we actually found three spared laying around so I sent her off with one.

Now I've been using card readers for quite some time and I remember the excruciating pain of waiting through a USB 1.0 download and how nice it was to move up to USB 2.0, so the card readers I use are all nice and fast. But come to find out that the rest of the ones laying around are all significantly slower, and that includes the one that I sent her off with. Hmm, bad pops. I hope she doesn't notice:)!

But then came the phone call an hour or two ago -- she and my son are trying to get her a wireless conntection to his router and they can't figure out how!

I've never used an XP laptop, and my upstairs workstation is configured differently, these laptops have a little Fn button that you use in a key combo to activate the wireless, and I must admit, in all the hecticity of the day I never got arond to testing that out on my router -- a big part which is because my router radio has been experiencing off-and-on "death" and so I've just gotten into the habit of sitting in the living room and running an ethernet cable first with my laptop and then, naturally, with this new one -- silly me. So I spent about an hour on the phone with my son trying to discuss a laptop that I wasn't looking at...and finally just told him to google and maybe get a forum where he can get an easy anwer while he is looking at the thing, and maybe I can settle down to a relaxing evening!

And so the saga continues...:)!

Well dang, she told me last night the thing is really slow with both her photos and music and she's not so happy...I'm going to have to go over it and check it out and see if we can't speed things up.

Have fun. I just read up on your new toy. Unless you have a card stuck in the slot, it doesn't have wireless. It's got a base of 256MB and a max of 1.25GB of RAM, and (unless upgraded) has a 30 GB drive. It's not going to be real happy trying to deal with raw images. I imagine lhere will be a real long wait while it pages. :)

I didn't know about the wireless thing, I guess I have to make another run to Best Buy, dang...

And yeah, I think the other limits will be a problem if she gets "serious" about her photography. For now, though, she's happy shooting jpegs and I may just set her camera to shoot medium size...:(

Ah...jpeg. Not so much of a problem.

I came across the following, which may help.

Dell Support wrote:

reinstall the NSS utility. NSS provides critical updates
for your operating system and support for Dell™

To download Notebook System Software:

1 Go to support.dell.com and click Downloads.
2 Enter your Service Tag or product model.
3 In the Download Category drop-down menu, click All.
4 Select the operating system and operating system

Hey, thanks for that info!

I do have a desktop icon that was automatically there, so that's handy.

I downloaded the system utilities, but it's taking forever to stuff and I don't yet know what to do with it...

Ii did check online about the wireless and found out that it is an add-on, odd for a modern laptop. I did, though find a pcmcia wireless card laying around that I've never needed to use, so that part is now active.

And, I'll have to shop for more memory, this thing is slow as a dog:(!

Fortunately, it does open Lightroom, Photoshop and Digital Photo Professional, but it does complain about low virtual memory and coughs/freezes up occasionally.

Ah, and then my son jumped in while the laptop was away and installed AVG antivirus. Well, I have nothing against AVG per se, but man now everything gets slowed down when it has to do stuff, grrr.

Oh well, for $60 I guess it's not a total fail -- she can listen to her music and do some stuff with her photos -- she has a bunch of gigs of both stored on the external drive so at least she can get some stuff done. And with the internet connected, well, that's good too...

Thanks all for your help and encouragement! It's fun/interesting but it's a bit stressful to jump into!

Another question!

I've never dealt with Dell and adding things to laptops in general.

So, my question: to add more RAM, do I need to order it directly from Dell, or can I use other vendors such as NewEgg and such?

Thanks again, all!

Thanks, I'm used to desktops, just not a proprietary thing like a Dell laptop.

Hey, a quick update!

Since she says here wireless internet is fine but she's hosed on her photos, I poked around on the 'net and some local computer places for the memory upgrade. Best Buy had the 1 Gig DDR for $50, but Amazon offered it for $30 plus shipping, so what the hey, $35 and I'd imagine the added GB will make a big difference -- I don't remember having big problems in the old days before working with 2+ gig machines.

I do have an old Photoshop Elements 4.0 disk laying around as well as an online PSE 5 upgrade password, so I'll set her up with that when the memory comes in and one way or another she should be able to get her jpeg processing up and running. If she ever gets around to trying Raw shooting at least Elements 5 and/or Lightroom 1.4 should be able to handle them "OK" though may still struggle a little bit with just the 1.25 GB.

Anyway, thanks for everyone who has jumped into the fun!
