Tripod to Head 1/4" to 3/8" Adapter Broke. Is That Common?

Do these adapters break a lot?

The 1/4" to 3/8" adapter I was using to mount a Manfrotto 3030 head to a lightweight tripod broke.

I wasn't that surprised. The adapter is a thin, flimsey looking thing, even the though the material looks like good stainless steel. The 3030 is a pretty hefty head too, and it's got those arms sticking out a long way to transmit some leverage to the mount during routine knocks and bumps in travel.

I'm going to have to get a new tripod with a 3/8" screw mount it seems.

Given the fact that most quality tripods use 3/8" threads to hold tripods, it is only the bargain tripod users which would really be needing the 1/4-to-3/8 adapter to hold a quality head...and then the bargain tripod user would also need to feel compelled to upgrade the stock 1/4-thread head which came with the bargain tripod.

So, the incidence of need for one of these is fairly low.

Those things are cheap, I just picked up a new monopod with the dual threads. I replaced it with a 3/8 16 grade 8 bolt. I had one crack a few years ago and now I always replace it with a grade 8 bolt if it doesn't already have a solid 3/8 bolt.

I'd like to replace the 1/4" stud on this tripod with a 3/8" one, but I don't know how I could get the 1/4" stud out. There doesn't appear to be access to the backside of the platform where the stud sticks out.

Any ideas?
