I was shooting tonight and my view finder went black. Looked
when I got home and it seems the mirror has come off the shutter. The shutter still flips when I took the mirror out. Is this serious? and can I fix it my self? If this has been asked before sorry could not find a post. thanks

Canon will fix it for free since it is a known problem. It's very serious. You can't see the image in the viewfinder without the mirror. It's not something you can fix yourself.

The mirror does not "come off the shutter". It is not attached to the shutter.

The mirror flips, the shutter does not "flip". The shutter "fires" or "travels" or "opens and closes".

Yes, it is a common problem with the 5D...send it in to Canon and they will replace it for free, additionally they will clean and adjust your 5D as well.

They were recalled in 2009 I think but the repair should still be done free.
