stupid question about grids

I've never installed a softbox grid. Before I add the grid, do I only insert the inner piece of diffusion material and not the outer one?

In all seriousness, the inner and outer layers of diffusion determine quality of light and evenness of that light. The grid, although it does affect quality in a very small way, is more about controlling directionality.

If you're creating soft light by using both layers of diffusion and add a grid then you've got directional soft light.
