So I still can't decide on my next lens purchase although I'm thinking it's going to be a L prime. I think I'll eventually be getting a wide FL prime and a mid tele. I see most people using a combo of either 24/50 or 35/85 but keep in mind that I'm still shooting crop and will eventually move up to FF someday. I guess 24/50 on crop is kind of like 35/85 on a FF but when I do get FF would that combo still be ok? What do people think about a 24/85 combo?

As for what I shoot, i don't really shoot one thing. I like landscapes, portraits, pics of food, just anything really. I do find myself shooting wider than on the longer end though so does that mean I should aim for 24/50? Would like to hear some opinions from owners.

2 primes ONLY?
Probably 85L and a 14mm prime, whether it be the cheapo 14mm Samyang, or the 14L. If I had other lenses (like my Tokina 11-16), I'd do 35L/85L

24/50 on crop or 35/85 on FF for me. Don't worry about when you go FF. When that time comes, sell your lenses and get something else. Unless you'll be moving to FF next month, buy what you need now and worry about the rest later.

24 + 85 for me. But 2 primes are not enough for me ;)

Even if I like a lot the 35mm focal length, 35mm is not enough wide. I like the Ultra-Wide effect.

I have a crop, and will never pay full price for a technology that's three years old and still at full price (the 5d mark ii). Will not get a full frame camera until probably a good two years, once the 5d III comes out and the 5d II falls in price significantly. My ideal would thus be 24/50, or 35/85 if I ever get a full frame camera.

I buy almost everything used too, so if I wanted to sell any of my canon gear I can easily do so with minimal losses, 10% at the very most, very minimal since I bought used instead of new. I don't think that I will ever get a 50/1.2 though, from the reviews I've seen the IQ from it doesn't seem to justify its steep cost relative to the 50/1.4. If I got a 50mm it would only be the sigma 50/1.4, not the 50/1.2L.

I wonder if people have actually tried all of those primes mentioned. How would they know first hand what set to use if they haven't used those specific primes?

I picked the 24L + 50L because the 35L is a boring lens, and the 85L is getting a little too long/heavy for me. The 50L is a really fun lens. It has the bokeh qualities of the 85L but not the weight/length. The 24L is a fun perspective and the 1.4 aperture helps to isolate subjects. The colors of the 24L and the 50L is fantastic!

What is your reason for limiting yourself to two lenses? If it's budget, that can be solved easily.

An 85L/35L combo is about $3600 off B&H. For far, far less, you can have the Sigma Trinity (Sigma 30mm, 50mm, and 85mm). Those 3 lenses would be just $1950 or so off B&H. Less than just a single 85L.

These 3 lenses would net you ~50mm, 80mm, and 135mm FOV on a crop. When you move up to full frame, to keep the same FOV, just sell the 30mm and buy a 135L.

Done and done.

part of the reason for limiting to 2 of the 4 lenses is budget but another reason would be how much i'd use each one. for example if i had 35, 50, and 85, the 35 or the 50 would prob not get used as much. also i'm not trying to completely ignore my zoom either.

it seems like at this point a 24L and either a 50/85 would be a good option. or maybe a 24L and sigma 50 or canon 85 1.8 would be much more affordable as well.
