So I'm at a point now where I've hit a wall with my foray into turning DP'ing into a career. A lot of projects that I'm applying to either as an AC or as a DP require prior experience with the RED camera system. Unfortunately, since I'm decades away from being able to afford one, and plagued by the catch-22 of needing experience to get experience, I'm finding myself in an awkward position.

Are there any books out there that go into detail about the RED camera's operation, and more importantly, post-production work flow? It would be nice to familiarize myself on some level.

Or alternatively, if you guys have any tips on how to get exposure to the RED system I'm all ears =)

Youtube is always a good starting source.

What you're looking for is now to operate a professional camera, not just RED.

Also, Magic Lantern for 5D is also a good starting point on how to use the professional features built.

the scarlet is expected to launch at some point this year, and, having heard the target price somewhere else, they may actually be affordable (relatively, anyway). in any case, there's a thriving online community at reduser.net. also, you can search for rental shops in your area for hands-on tinkering.

Don't even bother waiting, hoping, or even mention of upcoming RED cameras. RED has a complete failure on their product release date, and that's written in stone.

yeah trey, not holding my breath but the fact that prototypes are in a select few hands is what gives me any glimmer of hope.

i will add that red is not the end-all-be-all. if a prospective studio or shop that is hiring has a red requirement, it's only because they are already entrenched in the red workflow. go somewhere else and you might find them working entirely with vdslrs (which is pretty common these days). as stated earlier, it'd probably be more of a benefit to familiarize oneself with general film/video terms than concentrating solely on red right out of the starting gate.

If you follow Tom Guillmette's video on vimeo, there are some explanation of RED One.

Cheers!

This tip was given to me by a fellow POTNer, look into local videographer association. Become a member or be friends with them, volunteer or apply for anything, I.e. production assistant or something along the line.
