the examples in this forum from this lens are really impressive. While it certainly speaks more to the skills of the photographers and the subjects they've chosen, I can't help but think this lens will certainly be an excellent tool in my bag.

I'm really tempted to get this lens but the lack of AF confirm is putting me off. Are recent AF confirm chips any good? Also is it possible to buy a metal lens mount so that you don't have to stick the chip onto a brand new lens and probably void the warranty in the process?

honestly, i find af confirm to be rather useless. freeing yourself completely from all the focus points is wonderful... and allows you to "compocus" in one fluid motion.

I second this. Before you waste time and money on an AF chip, try using the AF confirm with one or your current lenses. Turn off AF and just use the confirm light to focus. Once the light is lit, slowly keep turning the focus ring. See how far you can turn it before the light goes out again. On my 24-105, it's quite a bit. All that extra turning just induces error. There is only one point along the ring rotation where your aiming point is in focus unless you're shooting at F8 or above.

Which body do you have? This lens is really easy to focus on a 7D. I'd think it would be the same for a 5D or 5D MkII.

A 550D currently although I should hopefully be going FF within ~6 months with either the rumoured "entry level" FF or a 5DmkII. I think I'd struggle going MF only through the viewfinder with the 550D but I guess if I got used to it now I'd then find it easy with a FF + pentaprism. Thanks for the replies, I'll have a think about it and keep my lenses on MF for a few days to see how it goes.
