I feel like an idiot....

I've never used this program...I've been using PS...
But my cousin is getting a Canon and will not be shooting RAW...just JPEGs...
so...

I've tried to familiarize myself with ZB and for the life of me I can't find the way to reduce the size of a file...

Help says:

<LI class=kadov-p-CNumbered>In the Task area click Internet, and then click E–mail Images.
  1. Select Images
Click this step to select the images you want to e–mail.
But in the task area and Internet the send E-mail Images option is grayed out...

Help also gives this advice:
To resize the images, select the Resize and compress images into JPEG type radio button.

But I cannot find this "radio button" whatever THAT is...

Now I've opened an image (at least it LOOKS open) so I would expect to find either of these options available...but no....

I'm at a loss here...I like PS because it is so "literal" in terms of how to do something...if you can read the tool bar at the top you can do almost anything...but nearly all other "simple" programs seem MUCH more complicated to just find the editing options...

I would appreciate it if someone could walk me through this so I can explain to my newbie cousin how to resize a JPEG for mailing and saving in a smaller size to put on a flash drive and take to Costco for printing...I've tried Picasa and it totally confused me as well...

Thank you...VERY much....

Radio Buttons are just Icons that you click with your mouse. In ZB most are over on the left with others in each window.

Why not just use DPP? Doesn't have to be Raw to use it.

In the Preview mode select the image thumbnails of the images you want to resize and export.
On the left side clock Export / Export Still images, The export Still images screen will open.
Click to check on resize image during export and choose the size you want. If you want to longest dimension to be 800 pixels select the Long side and type in 800.
Click to check on Change Image Type, then scroll down to choose the type of file you want to save it as. i.e. Jpeg, gif, or bmp.
Adjust Image quality, (determines output file size)
Change the name if you want at File Name Settings.
Choose the folder
Click Finish.

Radio button for changing image type is in the middle of the Export Still Images screen where you can also change the size.

Why not?
With DPP
You have the ability to convert image format.
You have the ability to change the image dimensions.
You have the ability to adjust the IQ which effects the output file size.
You have the ability to rename the files.
You have the ability to save your files to any folder/directory.
You have the ability to do that all to a single image or to multiple images.

What more do you need that would be different to save a picture to send through Email?

Kitacanon,

You say your cousin will be shooting jpegs -- are you trying this out with jpegs or with Raw files?

From what you describe, I'd suspect Raw, and you should know that ZoomBrowser is fairly useless with Raw files. You just have to go into DPP to get anything done with Raws.

If I'm correct, then if you still want to help your cousin with ZoomBrowser, just do a quick jpeg conversion in DPP and then you can go to ZoomBrowser to see what you can play with.

I'll say I'm stabbing in the dark here because I shoot Raw and rarely even open ZoomBrowser, but this could help you help the 'cous.

I just went through that process
...converting and saving a jpeg in DPP (plugging in 900pxl width @ 150dpi) for emailing and 4x6 printing, as I assume that's what he'd be doing mostly...

Editing a Jpeg in DPP and saving them seems pretty straight forward...

and then 'trim' in ZoomBrowzer if needed...

I will go over with him the in-cam settings approach to get an output that wouldn't need much...I think that's the trick here...

Thanks....a lot...

Do you mean crop? DPP does that very well and levels horizons as well.
I'd forget about ZB. IMHO, it's worthless. Irfanview, Faststone and Picasa are all freeware that are a thousand times better.

Yes I can trim in DPP....I guess it would be better than using ZB...
...and since most of his printing WOULD be 4x6 he could just set the custom frame and trim away knowing the trimmed display would be exactly the size of the print...
Thanks....

I'll look into Faststone....I don't like Picasa...it confuses me...
