Longevity of flashes (MR14Ex)

Is it a bad idea to buy a used ring flash? I found a used MR14Ex for a good price. Do these go bad eventually? What do you check for when buying it?

The flash tubes must either last a long time, or are not easily available. Just did a quick Google search, and can find other flash tubes, but none for the MR14EX.
