The number one rule for PP any person, adult or child, is this:

Get the skin tones right.

People will tolerate a lot of PP decisions, but if their skin looks either sickly or nuclear, they'll hate the photo, irrespective of anything else you do to it.

With children, it becomes even more important. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen the desaturated-pseudo-HDR look on a photo of a child...it works for a boxer or an 85-year-old harmonica player from New Orleans. It doesn't work for a 2 year old toddler.

Really, if you get the skin tones right and you have decent lighting and a relatively good sense of photographic composition, it's very hard to make children look bad.
