So I have a 50D that I have been using for about 4 months, and realize that I want to go further in photography than I thought, and was wondering if it is a wise choice to go from my 50D to a 5Dc. I am assuming it is, since the 5Dc is full-frame, and that's what I am looking for, but won't be able to afford a 5DII for a LONG time.

Just figure I get some thoughts on this. And I guess another question would be how well the 5Dc is holding up, since it's been around for a while.

Thanks!!!!!

Ken

Looking at your flickr I'm not sure 5dc is right for you. I see lots of sports shots and less portraiture. You have a very good camera and I would suggest you stick on to it for a while longer.

I don't know is a 50d to 5dc is an upgrade. It would definitely be a tradeoff for sure. I don't know why everyone is obsessed with FF.

I wouldnt do it. Like everyone says "get better lens" though theres a distinct look when shot by a FF but not much to warrant a change imo.

I moved from a 5dc-7D and now the 60D and I dont think i can go back to a 2.5 LCD screen.

I went from a 30D to a 5D since I got it at a good price and for what I was shooting at the time the 5D worked better for me. I loved the 30D though. If I had a 50D it would have been a much harder decision, I like the idea of 15MP, MA, and live view.

I wouldn't do it but I find LiveView very valuable since I use ND filters.

I did that trade, i don't regret it one bit....BUT i rarely ever used live view and never used the burst of the 50D, two things the 5D doesn't do well...it didn't matter to me as i never used it...so if you like the burst and the good screen with live view then i wouldn't recommend the 5Dc

Or save up a bit and add the 5D and keep the 50D as well.

You lose E-TTL II as well. But, if you're shooting in a studio setup or have time to get your flash levels set, you'll be fine.

Thanks for all of the replies!!! That's why I love it here.

Yes, I do sports, not sure I'll ever venture into portraits or wedding stuff. So I think I will stick with the 50D. I actually dropped it off at Mid State Camera Repair (great place, didn't realize I was 20 minutes away..), had them do a tune-up. They said there were spots all over the sensor, gave it a good cleaning.

I was also thinking of the 5D as a second, but I am saving for a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, so i think I'll get that first.

Thanks again all!!! I really appreciate it!!

5Dc does have E-TTL II. For me one of the hardest things to deal with going from a more modern body to the 5Dc is the LCD. 230k pixels on the 5Dc while your 50D has 920k. Especially if you do pixel peeping to see what is in focus with a fast prime.

I don't know why everyone is obsessed with FF.

Obviously because having a larger sensor makes you a better photographer, I mean, duh...

Sports, yes 50d all the way! But I went that route from crops to now a 5d. I am happier with ff. Yes glass is the way to go but you get something magical with the images firom a 5d, something I never felt i had with any of my crop bodies even with L series lenses. As you can see I am happy with the photos produced with the cheapo glass I have now.

I am not sure if you have used one already?

If you don't need faster AF of 50D or live view 5D is the way to go. And AF on 5D is not that bad...Personally I'd still pick 5D over 50D any day

well I have a 50D and a 40D, both great cameras. I recently got a 5D cheap and to be honest the only time I use the 50D is when I need speed (birds etc) The 5D is just such a beautiful camera. I agree you don't have all the bells and whistles and the 5D LCD is not that great but the image quality compared to the crops is beautiful. So if I was in your place, Id try and pick up a 5D but keep your 50D as well. they make a great pair and both are great cameras
