What do you think would produce a sharper image on a T21
I'm looking at getting either the Cannon 24-105 f4 L
or the sigma 30 1.4 - canon 50 1.4 - Canon 85 1.8
So what would produce a sharper image ? the L glass or a non L prime
Thanks for your thoughts

I think the question you should be asking is do you want the convience of a zoom vs. the speed of primes. In terms of sharpness, the primes will be a bit sharper typically at similar focal lengths and apertures but its hardly something to fret over.

The primes should be sharper at f/4.. and nearly the same results after f/5.6
The color rendition & bokeh of the L zoom should be better...

The main question is to know if you need aperture like f/2 or not ?

Well one thing for certain is the 24-105 will be alot sharper at 24/f4 then any of the primes you have mentioned wide open and thats a certain for sure.

But all three of those primes stopped down to f2.8 will be very nice and still 1 stop faster then the slower 24-105/f4.

IMO instead of spending money on the 24-105 which is really designed for a FF format i would consider the Sigma 17-50/f2.8 + an external flash for your crop body. Then save for the Canon 70-200/f4 IS. But thats just me.

Regards whatever your decision, ;)

The primes will be sharper. Replace the canon 50 1.4 with a sigma 50 1.4 and that will be even more sharp(er).
But personally, I'd have the primes AND a zoom. The primes for low light work and the zoom for every day use.

17-55 IS, Sigma 30, Tokina 11-16, Canon 70-200 variant.

If you can't afford the 17-55 IS, get the Tamron 17-50.

If you can't afford a Canon 70-200, get the 55-250 IS.

If you can't afford the Sigma 30, get the 50/1.8.

If you can't afford the Tokina 11-16, save up and get one of the 17-5X beasts.

All are sharp. What in the world do you plan on shooting? Guess it doesn't matter since the range is all over the place.

it might be better to first determine your subject then decide on a lens, e.g. portrait? landscape? macro?
or all of the above

In real world use, all are sufficiently sharp. What's your intended use?

I have the 24-105L, love it. Even on my Rebel it's a great lens and it becomes something like a 36-144 on your t2i, it came with my 5D when I bought it. Probably the best walkaround i've ever shot with, good enough for 150 miles this weekend at MSBike.
