Hi, I have some strange photos being taken and I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that I unwittingly changed a setting while in manual mode. Keep in mind, this problem only happens to me while in manual mode.

Here is what happens: It takes this entire process 30 seconds to take a photo, and when I take a photo, you can hear the picture take, then there is a few seconds of a delay...and then another picture take sound as if a second shot was taken. The screen goes black for this entire process and the words BUSY are at the bottom of my screen, and then after that you can view your picture by pressing play. When you do press play to review your shot, it is all white. Can someone recommend a fix that doesn't include losing my temper or buying a new digital cam?

Unnecessary sidenote: I love this camera, and I'm glad I found this forum!

Here is a resulting shot below. Now, when I say my screen goes black, I can see what my camera is pointing at through the screen if I press the shoot button halfway down.

According to the image EXIF data your shot was taken at ISO1600 with a shutter speed of 10 seconds. The 10 second shutter speed means the shutter was open for 10 seconds which is why you thought you heard the shutter twice. The long shutter speed and high ISO resulted in a completely over exposed picture, which is why it's entirely white.

If you plan on shooting in manual mode, you need to learn how things like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (film speed) affect the exposure of your shot. You also need to set all of these manually to get a proper exposure, the camera won't do it for you when you shoot in manual mode.

I completely agree. Now that you diagnosed my illness (me), I remember fooling with these things after a brief read on exposures and HDR. I'll see how to change my settings so that I can fix the problem Thank you so much for your help.

Wow. I immediately fixed the problem. Can you recommend a good base for both ISO and shutter speeds to springboard from going forward? Right now I have ISO 400 and 1/4 shutter speed, now that you helped me diagnose my problem.

Manual just means you are dialing in the exposure settings yourself. For a good starting point, put it on P mode or Auto and see what settings the camera picks for a given light. If it is during the day, it might be ISO 100, f5 and 1/1000. INdoors it could be ISO 800, f3.5 and 1/30. It just depends on how much light is falling on your subject.

I will say 1/4 is going to be too slow of a shutter speed for sharp photos, though, due to motion blur from your hands. It seems like you need a primer on exposure basics, so I might suggest finding a book or online guide for that. Once you understand how changing one setting effects the others, it all starts to make sense.

You should get a book like this one;

http://www.amazon.com …/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top (external link)

It explains how to properly set exposure.
