I shot tethered and as the images come in to LR3 I want them and the catalog folder to be sync to another folder on a workstation on my network. Is there some software that will allow me to do this in real-time? This will allow me to not have to wait 3-5 mins for file to transfer across the network.

Always sync could do it. you can set it up to sync folders as soon as it sees a change.. Its free untill you try to sync more than 40000 in a 1 month period.. I ended up buying it was cheep enough anyway and it was the only thing i found that would work properly with my network drive

Are you just trying to copy them to another directory or are you trying to get your lightroom catalog to point to another place on your network?

If it is the former you could try this (external link) if you are using windows.

What I am trying to do is. When I shoot a client as the ram files are save to the laptop they are sent to a shared folder on my network that my assistant can pull up for the client to review after the session. The way I am doing it now is to copy/paste into the share on workstation. My only question in doing realtime sync is will the lock file that LR3 creates need to be deleted or not synced?

While it may not satisfy the "real time" requirements listed in the opening post, Free File Sync works in a similar manner with NO limitations on file numbers and could have fitted the bill for you.

Did you try the link I posted above for sync?

Just so I understand your workflow here, are you trying to get the files from your camera to be sync'd or is it the files after post processing that need to be sync'd

As the files come in to a folder on my laptop through EOS Utility and LR3 opens them for me to preview. I want the software to copy the raw and catolog to a share on another laptop in realtime. This way when I send the client to my assisant to preview the session the files are already there.

Why don't you just have them connect to your machine remotely over the network?

You are saying that you want your catalog to be "shared" on a network drive? That will be a problem -- Lightroom won't let the catalog be opened by more than one computer and won't run on an actual network drive.

On approach would be to have the "watched" folder on a shared drive -- you can then set your Lightroom preference to automatically save the metadata to an xmp sidecar file so your assistant can read the metadata containing any edits you do from the same drive -- as long as Lightroom is running on separate machines with separate catalogs you can share the drive with the images.

Only editing I do is crop and rating by color and star.
How would the assisant be able to read the xmp sidecar from workstation?
If I change this setting in catalog settings will it apply to every catalog.

as long as Lightroom is running on separate machines with separate catalogs you can share the drive with the images.

After each shoot (which is about every 15 mins) I create a catalog /Jones/Jones LR cat/CR2 that contain the raw file that are auto import from the watch folder (05_21_2011).

So, you have your watch folder -- I'd just have that on an internal drive and not have it shared. From there you can do the star/color/rating.

You can turn LR preferences to automatically write the metadata to a file so that would save you a step -- if I remember correctly it only affects files that are being changed.

Once you've done that all you have to do is within Lightroom move the images to the shared drive/folder. Your assistant would need to initially import them (it should automatically recognize the xmp sidecar files and apply them). From there I believe that your assistant can bring in more files as you add them by right-clicking on the parent folder and choosing Synchronize.

But, having tossed all that out, I've never actually done anything like this and you will want to test/verify/experiment with things until you have what you know is a working system. Don't just take our word for it!

I should add that there are some catalog "functions" that do not end up in the metadata sidecar file, so make that part of your testing so you can be sure that the bits you do need will show up

Just get Dropbox. It has a LAN option, which should work for what you're looking for.

If you do get it, you can use this link http://db.tt/khWQv2S (external link) , they'll give me some more free storage. If you dont mind :)
