So I have gotten my first canvas print and it looks stunning. Now that I have seen the results and like it I don't mind putting some more money down and printing some more of my better photos. I was considering hitting up some of the local stores (artsy/gallery type) to see if they would be willing to sell the photos (I know the would get a good cut). I don't have much experience with this, but was wondering if anyone had any tips of how to go about it. I am not trying to get rich off of this by any means, just making 20 dollars of profit on a photo would make my day as a broke college student. Thanks in advance for your help!

FYI, most galleries take 50 % of profit and maybe more for a sales commission so keep that in mind when thinking about doing this type of thing.

Just thought you might not know about the 50% which is somewhat standard.

I think you meant 50% of the sale, not the profit.

Example.

Cost of print, $20.00, price at shop, $50.00. Most shops then take 50% of the $50.00 leaving the photographer $25. If the shop only took $15.00 (50% of the profit) then that's not too terrible, but it will likely be the $25.00 leaving only a profit margin of $5.00.

Typically for things like this you need high value or extremely high mark-up/low costs. Its a viable option if you live for instance in a highly traveled tourist area and have some nice iconic images of the local attractions and can sell a print of 10 a weekend...

I understand that part of the generally low profit margins that will most likely occur, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to get into the door to the galleries or stores to get my work displayed?

I was gonna go that route but opted for local coffee shops, my chiropractors office etc. Have prints up with my business cards on them. This way I'm in the spot light with zero competition.

I tried to get my stuff on art.com and a few others but that seemed like mission impossible.

Do you want them to sell your prints for you, or do you want them to display your prints so that clients will contact you directly? There is a major difference between approaching a business with a commission offer versus offering them free decor in exchange for making your card available.

I am feeling that the exchange for decor would be maybe the best option, but the commission option I am not ruling out. If you have knowledge of either one, or which is easier to get into that would be great.
