I want to invest in two things, and one thing will lead to another. I want to buy a Canon 5d Mark II and Elinchrom Rx Style 600. I have a 7d and 2 d-lite. I enjoy doing studio work more, its convenient for me when it comes to time. Since 7d is crop, I decided to upgrade to 5dmII, with my 50mm L, I start hitting the garage door, which will prompt me to open the door when I use my 70-200. But when I do some clients and a bit shy, I really cant open the garage door specially if its a lingerie shoot. I also have 580 ex II btw. I think there is a need for me to upgrade in lights which I decided with elinchrom rx style 600. If I buy the lights, Im thinking since Im going to start saving again for the camera, I might as well save for a 1d mark 4 which I am not very familiar with, but who would doubt it, unless you really think someone like a hobbyist like me dont need a very expensive camera. Thoughts anyone? Cheers all!

My thoughts, Id take a 5D Mark II for portraiture over a 1D4 any day of the week. Full frame just has some good advantages, like thin DOF, that are nice for portraiture. Not to mention having the 5D2 is like having the 1Ds3 since they have the same sensor and I believe processor.

If you are hitting the garage now why would you want a camera with a smaller sensor?

Take a look here
Dimensional Field of View Calculator (external link)
for make a more precise idea.
Remember that the canon 1d mark 4 is an aps-h camera and don't a full-frame with a 1.3 crop factor.

you really think someone like a hobbyist like me don't need a very expensive camera

I think isn't necessary but it's even true that for hobby the most spend a lot of money so you will not be the first and for sure you will not be the last.

About the light question you really need that power?
Perhaps could be sufficient the D-Lite-it 4.
Despite the Style RX have other type of benefits.

Actually It didn't occur to me that 1dm4 is not a full frame until you guys mentioned it, and then I remembered that its aps-h. What a save!
