Explain to me why the St Elmo's fire isn't blurred?
The panel and the windscreen are moving up and down at the same rate and the static discharge is on the windscreen so... ??
Saint Elmo's Fire usually flashes like lightning on the windscreen. This photo is actually a bit of a cheat. The shutter was open for two seconds and I captured multiple discharges in one frame. The cockpit looks blurry because of the long shutter speed, but the Saint Elmo's is sharp because it lasts just a couple milliseconds. I have seen Saint Elmo's fire glow like you describe, but only on rare occasions. When it does glow, it starts at the windshield wiper or on the ice detector probe -- any part of the airplane that sticks out irregularly. I saw the glowing variety more back in my turboprop days, flying at lower altitudes in heavy snow. Sometimes it really messes with radio transmitions. The radios get all staticy and it's impossible to hear ATC.
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I'm glad you like my blog! If you're into aviation or really into photography keep coming back. I try to update it once or twice a week.
