I suppose that's a possibility. I thought SEF "crawls" over surfaces like the discharge from a Van DeGraff generator. It clings and snakes its way over surfaces and doesn't "flash" like lightning.

I dunno... Color me curious. ;)

Pass, I was only guessing

Explain to me why the St Elmo's fire isn't blurred?

The panel and the windscreen are moving up and down at the same rate and the static discharge is on the windscreen so... ??

Saint Elmo's Fire usually flashes like lightning on the windscreen. This photo is actually a bit of a cheat. The shutter was open for two seconds and I captured multiple discharges in one frame. The cockpit looks blurry because of the long shutter speed, but the Saint Elmo's is sharp because it lasts just a couple milliseconds. I have seen Saint Elmo's fire glow like you describe, but only on rare occasions. When it does glow, it starts at the windshield wiper or on the ice detector probe -- any part of the airplane that sticks out irregularly. I saw the glowing variety more back in my turboprop days, flying at lower altitudes in heavy snow. Sometimes it really messes with radio transmitions. The radios get all staticy and it's impossible to hear ATC.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I'm glad you like my blog! If you're into aviation or really into photography keep coming back. I try to update it once or twice a week.

That's very cool! I've never actually seen an image of St. Elmo's fire.

I spend too much on flying to have much equipment worth listing!

Altitude604,

Thanks, please add me to your blog roll. The more links the better!

I got some cool thunderstorm pics over Texas yesterday. They should get posted soon.

Great photos and awesome blog! I started a travel blog when I first starting working at my current 121 carrier and that's what actually inspired me to take the next step up with my photography by buying a DSLR years ago. Also If you don't mind me asking it looks like you're working for a certain start up 121 carrier based out of SFO?

I love the shots and even more the blog.

As a frequent flyer for both business and personal, I always wonder what is going on up front or the sights from up front and the blog gives a fantastic view of that side of flying.

I have bookmarked it and will frequent it often.

By the way, to this day I am still a paranoid flyer!

haha yes, it's nice to share with people the "business side" of the industry.

to help with the paranoia, just remember that before you can even ever fly any aircraft for hire, you need at least 200hr of experience to get your license. how long did it take you to learn how to drive? ;)

And you'd have to be pretty lucky to find a job outside of instructing that will hire you to fly with less than 250 hours...

Understood.....but if you get in a car crash, chance of survival is much greater than a plane crash.

Thanks everyone. Glad you are enjoying my blog! I try to update it frequently so check back from time to time. I just finished writing the newest installment of my flying the line series (external link). Here's a link to the article (external link) and I posted a teaser photo below. It's a supercell thunderstorm over central Texas. You'll have to read the post to find out how it ends.

Like many others I have to say that's an awesome blog. I've read only about ten minutes, but I'll save it for Sunday morning with a pot of coffee.

I love to have something good to read when the house is quiet, the world is waking up and I'm drinking a fresh cuppa joe!

Super photography too.

Cheers !
