Was just going to say I dig the light hitting the eyes in #3. Nice capture.

I think you don't understand eye contact had nothing to do with the mood or style of this shoot. If you feel you must see eye contact in every portrait done, otherwise its a failure of a portrait, you will be a very depressed soul viewing portraiture in general.

The general mood I wanted was a cold/dejected fashion feel.

For me... I don't have to have eye contact in every shot. It was more about how the lighting is creating deep shadows in the eyes and it is taking away from the photo IMO. But.. to each his own. I didn't get cold and dejected at all from the shots... I got sunken eyes is all.

This shot... with the pose... tells more of a story... at least to me.

^ I'm sure all my photo's will not be perfect to everyone. ITs cool, I have favorites too... and only a select from this shoot actually made my website.

Wow - ok. I guess I'm a depressed soul viewing portraiture. Glad to know I figured this out while saying nice things about your pictures.

Man. Rude.

This was my point. All I saw was dark shadows in the eyes and it completely dominated the pictures for me.

This is your 2nd or 3rd time bringing up the same critique on the eyes. I get how you feel, and I already explained that eye contact was not the goal of the shoot. Yet you keep bringing it up over and over again. A little irritating... sorry.

And my point is this - If you demand to see eyes on the subject, otherwise its a bad photo, be prepared to see a lot of bad photo's in your endevors in photography.

To me these look a little flat? The blacks on the background aren't going black. They are cool and charcoal... Maybe that's what you were looking for? And yes, I'm nitpicking here. I happen to agree with ConverseMan, I didn't get the dejected feel that you were going for here either. They do look a little cold / James Dean, but even then I think you could get that equally as well with better lighting.

Again, this is my .02, but I happen to be a fan of your work, and while I applaud you for stepping out from what you normally post, I'm not sure that the feel you were looking for is coming through with these images.

All the same, they're nice photos. ;)

It wasn't a critique it was a comment. In this I just simply said that I didn't feel connected. Then I said that I thought you did a "great job all around".

In my post above, in this thread, I was excited to see some eye contact. It wasn't a critique, it was a comment. The shots were great and I love them - I don't understand how you took that as a "critique" - or harshly for that matter.

I did go back and re-read all your posts with Chris as a subject and no wear did you reference what mood you were going for. So how could I have known otherwise? I hadn't brought it up over and over again. Re-read the posts, no where in them was I harsh, unfair, unkind, or anything of that nature. I posted a critique about his eyes and the rest of that post and the one above were comments on how well you did.

I never said I demanded to see eye contact or it's a bad photo. I understand photography and portraiture as well. I understand that eye contact isn't always important. I get that, I really do. There is a mood to a picture when eye contact isn't made. One that couldn't be expressed when eye contact is prevalent - I get that. However, I do enjoy seeing eye contact. Do I think it is a bad photo when no eye contact is made? No and I never said that either.

However, coming out and saying what you did, to me, was harsh and wrong in my mind.

^ Thanks guys - In a less grumpy mood today :)

Converse - i'm sorry for lashing out.

Regarding my PP - I did a simple b/w conversion in LR and altered the contrast levels/white levels/black levels until I got them where I like them.

Then I did an exposure offset and gamma adjustment in Photoshop.
