Just picked up a Voigtlander 50 1.2 Nokton M and just shot a dozen or so test images.

All wide open on one of my Leica M 10s (wanted to see if I could focus it). The lens is very well made and the aperture has great firm 1/2 stop clicks. Focus is smooth and very nice to use. Over all first impressions are very good indeed. Love the kind of vintage lens glow when wide open. It seems to be very sharp and I didn't seem to have any issues with focusing it wide open. It also focuses at 2.3 ft.

wide open (1.2)

In about May I made myself a little promise: if I got a better job for the coming academic year, I could buy myself a Leica to celebrate/reward myself for having done the leg-work to get the position. I did indeed get a significantly better job for this coming academic year (starting Monday) and have just got back from Madrid where I (dropped off three Fuji lenses & some cash and) picked up my very own Leica M4.

Thanks. Yeah, I think it has been lightly used up to this point because cosmetically it's almost new.

Excellent work. I like all three but especially the portrait.

I wanted to pick up an older Nokton they had in the shop, but I decided to respect my initial budget which the Nokton would have blown somewhat. The M4 is definitely enough of a treat for now.

Waiting for a 7artisans 50mm to arrive. It was in budget and I've heard that it's quite good for the price. It will be fine to get started on, and I can upgrade later when I've earned another reward! :-)

Said lens arrived today but was defective - the aperture blades made a clearly misshapen oval that was way off centre - so I have sent it straight back. Now pondering whether to order another one or go a little outside my budget (I do have the money) and get something a little more ... German.

Owain, I can tell you this Voigtlander 50 1.2 Nokton was quite a pleasant surprise. I would HIGHLY recommend it. The build is solid and the focus is like butta. Mine was tack sharp out of the box on my M 10. If you are on the fence check out some of the reviews.

I was thinking Voigtlander but perhaps to avoid straying too far from my initial budgeting, the f/1.5 might be a good intermediate option but I'll check reviews on the different options.

What's your budget? I got the Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar for $495 used on Ebay a few months ago and it's a great lens.

If I could get something in that region, I'd be happy, and could go a little higher if need be. Time to give eBay some attention over the next week or two.
