True, the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH FLE might be better in terms of framing a little looser. The Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Nokton (external link) is a worthy contender as well. It's larger and heavier, requires hand (or third party) coding and doesn't quite have that wide open sharpness/bite... But it's easier to find and has a nice (and different) "look" all its own. Not to mention a helluva lot cheaper!

Yeah but the new 35 1.4 summilux is the finest 35mm lens you can buy and one big reason I will own Leica is that great Leica M glass. I don't need all the lenses only the ones that match my vision.

True enough! Also why I went over to primarily Leica lenses. Expensive, but really, as good as it gets.

Though to be honest, I think the bokeh of the pre-FLE version is nicer... Too bad regarding the focus shift though.

Hey guys, I've been thinking to pick a Leica up, are there any particular things that I need to check when buying a second-hand Leica M body? :)

Which one, or rather - what kind? Film, digital? In case of the former, something current or something classic? I wrote a few articles recently that might help:

Is the M8 Still a Good Choice? (external link)
Overview of the M System (external link)
Why Buy Leica? (external link)

If you're just starting out, maybe pick up a non-Leica film body and see if the "rangefinder thing" is for you (I'm working on an article to address that right now). If you want to go digital, an M8 or M8.2 are good options if you don't want to splash out on an M9. Glass can run you $150 or so all the way up to $10k. There's a lot of vintage and third-party glass out there.

Agreed w/Ronnie... "Just Do It(TM)"

I was and continue to be amazed at how much sharpness photos have from digital Ms (due to the lack of an AA filter in front of the sensor). Get something like the Zeiss Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM and you'll have the ultimate point and shoot. :p

i must admit, manual focus is tough with an F1...but a little easier with the 1.4x eyepiece
