Hi I am newly starting at Macro and want to go quite extreme. I have set out a year to perfect this, but from the start hit quite some trouble.

I see so many guys with similar setup, who get great result so think I am missing some stuff.

this is my setup, forgive me for the quick aproach here, just want to get started and get some tips to improve:

the 50 mm is reversed attached but I have off course no control over it....i have heard about setting aperture etc but I dont know how in this case.

also i find the whole thing extremely wobbly, i tried one stack tonight, but it seems my main problem is motion. thinking i need to remove tripod and bolt the whole thing down on a strong board with cushioned legs to remove motion. anyhow any tips, pls send them my way!

The tripod should be sturdy enough. Try using a remote shutter release and lock up the mirror or use liveview. A few photos of your work would also help in figuring out what is wrong.

If you don't have a quick release cable, then you can use the timer function on the shutter button. In the past, I've used a 5 second delay.

You've got quite an advanced set up there. I'd recommend getting some extension tubes and dispensing with the bellows for now. When you're comfortable with conventional macro photography, you'll be able to use the bellows with more experience under your belt.

Hi, here is a link to one image i took, tried making a stack and after using my brain .....i think my main problems are : 1 motion, the rig just moves to much, even i do use mirror lock up and a cable release, and 2 as i dont have any aperture control as the lens is reversed mounted its shooting wide open, the DOF is really only a MM deep, wished i could step the 50 MM down to F8 or so and do it again ;(

many folks have recomended me now to stopp bellows and use extension tubes first....perhaps i have to splurge again....:(

So here we go......another bad attempt however getting slightly better.

do need a small softbox though as the flash just shows up a million times and its far from flattering!

F8, 25 images, stacked but should have been 100 images in hindsight, to many focus points missed.

one problem consistenty plays up is the left side of frame, some weird side to side "motion" seems to be there, and its been there in every shot i stacked, but not in any of the originals, i could crop it, but wonder why first.

used a big softbox at first, 60x60 way to big off course but dont have anything smaller and it was just not delivering enough light....need to tailor a small one to be close in.

Feel like the whole rig is to wobbly still and thought of it, so will move the thing to a wooden board set up, and will use the left/right and front back "slider" to be the "stage" for the subject as it can be then used as a stationary to focus and position the subject, it will take away from the top heavy tripod which is just to wobly for my liking now. once thats done will add a simple rail to do the focus stacking with the camera mounted right on top of it. the bellows is also to weak and flimsy, wil strengthen it with a stabilizing plate, probably wood.

any tips folks?

ah yes what is this?

winner with correct answer gets a bucket of beer or cider :)
