Are PVA panel monitors good for photo editing?

An illustration in the Viewing Angles section of a TFT Central article on monitor specifications

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk …ontent.htm#colour%20depth (external link)
(scroll down about 4/5 of the page)

shows a large color and saturation shift with a change in horizontal viewing angles for VA panels.

I'm not sure which VA panels are encompassed by this VA designation.

I'm not actually concerned about extreme viewing angles, as I'm only concerned about viewing monitors individually and head on. I am concerned about color shifts from minor angle changes typical of individual viewing.

Yes, they can be as good or better than IPS displays. It really depends on the supporting electronics that come with the monitor.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Absolutely! One of the best values in a pro quality monitor with mated calibration kit is the NEC P221w with Spectraview II.

You should take a ride over to B&H and check it out in person.

Hi Chas:
I will take a look at it at B&H.

The Spectraview thing seems a little confusing. The newegg page you gave a link to doesn't seem to mention that Spectraview comes with it, and they offer a bundle with a Pantone Huey which seems redundant if it has Spectravew.

Also, Spectraview seems kind of pricey at $289 (at B&H)

compared to other calibrators with software that cost less and work with any monitor.

I wonder what does Spectraview does that a regular X-rite iOne Display 2 doesn't?

Well... it does. Read deep into the specs, but that's what the "SV" in the model name refers to. The Spectraview system is an integrated and proprietary calibration system. Go to NEC's website and read about it.

The price is currently $570 at B&H.

Not with regard to viewing angles.

A PVA is okay if you are the only one sitting behind it.
If you have an art director next to you, he will see something different then you.

I have an Eizo CG223W, which is a PVA. It's a very nice screen, but you have to be straight in front of it to accurately judge shadow detail.
