When I'm out on the street or walking around. I only take 1 camera and 1 lens. And since I use primes, it's a really light setup.

And I love primes most of all. The 50 is a drag on a crop.

Well for wildlife shooting, you need big gear. End of story. But you also need to go looking for it as it rarely just jumps out at you on the way to work. At least not where I live.

For the rest of the stuff, you could easily be shooting something like this: http://www.samsung.com …d_General_samsung%20nx100 (external link)

Maybe with the 20-50 and 30mm f2

agree 50 is too close on a crop.

Does sound like you're leaning towards a point n shoot. I say go for the s95 or the G12, or a used S90 or G11 (see 250 price) if you're on a budget.

I understand about the wildlife. It's really whatever is available and strikes interest. I like to practice, I like to play in post and I want to photograph lot's more.

I need to read up on the samsung. Looks interesting if it's almost as good as my heavy gear. That 70-200 is a sweet lens, but not very stealthy.

Thanks again for all the replies.

That's why I use a 35mm on my 1.5x. When I see people using a 50mm on a crop, I just shake my head. I know they don't understand why they have 50mm other than that's "what old school photogs use". 50mm has no business on a crop body.

If you want stealthy, get a Leica M9...

Huh?

Do you tell 5D users that an 85mm has no business on their camera?

As for the insurance thing... find another insurance company for just your gear. You don't have to use your existing insurance company for that. For $10k worth of gear, full insurance a year, should not be more than $200.

If you have this insurance, it would pretty much fix your theft concerns. Then it just becomes a matter of choosing the appropriate gear for your trips.

Also, you may want to play with some daytrip experiments where you only allow yourself one lens... and maybe even a fixed focal length(prime) at that. This can be extremely therapeutic. It will force creativity as you'll have to really work to get your shots. Great learning/growth tool if you ask me.

I did nothing but a 50mm lens for over a year. I contribute that to teaching me more about composition than anything else, by far.

The 50 is a great lens in quality, but it doesn't fit very much in practicality. I've forced myself to use it for a long time, it's just way too long. Maybe I need to change the way I shoot a bit, so the 50 works. That's the cheapest solution.

Great advice. I'd rather my photography be more like that all the time. Too many lenses take me away from photography.

No. Why would I do that? Silly comment is silly.

I guess I should throw away my 85L, since it's useless on a FF, eh? :p

50mm is very suitable on a crop camera, but it's best suited as a portrait length, rather than a general lens, that's all.

Is that the point you were trying to make?

50mm x 1.6 = ~85mm (80 actually, but close enough)

Using a 50mm on APS-C is like using an 85mm on FF.

So your silly logic is silly :p

Now if you had said, "I think 35mm is a way better normal prime on crop", then I agree. I have both 30mm and 50mm f1.4 lenses and enjoy them both.

You already have some great advice. Just out of curiosity, where are you that crime is so bad?
