50mm x 1.6 = ~85mm (80 actually, but close enough)

Using a 50mm on APS-C is like using an 85mm on FF.

So your silly logic is silly :p

Now if you had said, "I think 35mm is a way better normal prime on crop", then I agree. I have both 30mm and 50mm f1.4 lenses and enjoy them both.

In fact, I did say that...

50mm on a crop is NOT like using an 85mm on a FF.

50mm on a crop for just taking photos? Get real. It's much too long and not wide enough. This is why it's odd on a crop. He's better with a 20, 24 or 35mm lens for "standard" shooting. Not a 50mm.

Wow! You have a very narrow photographic mind.

You already have some great advice. Just out of curiosity, where are you that crime is so bad?

Detroit suburbs. My neighbor got broken into last week while she was home during the day. We recently had a couple of fellas in an unmarked van knocking on doors and looking in mail boxes. It sucks around here.

So you believe that 80mm (a 50mm equaliv on a crop) is equal to an 85mm? Wow.

You are almost there. Just let the gears finish turning before you post again.

Haha trolls be trolling.

I'd reckon that a majority of the photography greats made do with a 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm, the 50mm being used for a vast majority of shots.

If you don't like showing off your 70-200, switch it for a 135L.

Ditch your grip.

and get a crumpler or similarly deceptive camera bag.

Other than depth of field, how is it that drastically different? I agree it's not the same but its pretty close

Well, it's a bit more complicated than that and DOF is a significant portion of it.

Maybe you could enlighten us. I have to admit just going from a 5D2 to a 7D my 50mm, while I loved it on the MK2 just isn’t the same on the 7D. BUT if I put an 85 on the MK2 and a 50 on the 7D, I wouldn't see much difference FOV or DOF. I mean I could look VERY closely and see a difference but the differences are very minor.

Perhaps "significant" was not the best choice of words on my part then......

i have a cheap messenger style bag, in which i keep my 5d2 and 3 lenses. when i grab 3 manual focus primes the kit is very light and i can probably walk with it all day if i have to.

henri cartier-bresson did it with a rangefinder and a 50mm. the kit wasn't cheap but it's not a lot to lug around either

The problem seems to be you don't have one thing you really like to focus on photographing; you are all over the place. Just focus on one area of interest and spend time there and the other stuff comes as it comes. Most opportunities don't just happen by chance and when it doesn't it flattens your joy.

It's a lot more interesting to have a shooting plan when just walking around. Today I am going to shoot door knobs, for example. It narrows your focus, you don't need more than 1 lens and you'll probably get some shots you'll be happy with or, ar least learn how to shoot doorknobs and more importantly how not too shoot them.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Really? You went out specifically to shoot doorknobs?
