Is it just me or was the T2i one of the most popular Rebel series ever sold? Everyone I know had one, even the pro shooters for stupid little experiments. Up until recently, even I had one.

I feel like the T3i wasn't that huge an upgrade in comparison, either.

All of the Rebel models are big sellers because of the price/value ratio but yes, the T2i (550D) does seem popular

Well the T3i is basically just a T2i with a flip out screen and more software image processing/altering features. Same sensor, same size (give or take a mm), same fps, etc. There are a couple other small changes, but nothing major.

T3i is comparable to the 7D as far as image quality. Some 7D owners might argue it but if you spend the time and compare unaltered pictures from both you will see. ;)

So is the T2i. I don't find the T3i to be a worthy upgrade for myself -- I'm holding out until they make a SLR with AF on video (unless I decide to go FF, which isn't likely for a LONG time.)

I don't see the allure to the T3i when compared to the T2i unless you just have to have an articulating screen. If I had not found a 50D for the same money as a T2i, I would have bought one as a backup instead. It's a fantastic little camera.

After picking up a FF body, I decided to sell my 7D and GH1 and replace them both with a T3i for a compact travel camera. I like articulating screens for macro and I also like being able to fold the screen in when hiking. I decided to buy new (Canon service has been good to me) and the retail T2i wasn't any less $$ than T3i. I guess that does say something about how popular/good the T2i is!

I think the T2i was a game changer! LOL! The T3i wasn't really a replacement, just an update. The swivel screen is a great option to have. You don't HAVE to use it, but a fixed screen doesn't give you the option. When the T3i came out I always maintained that I wouldn't sell my T2i to get a T3i because it was really an upgrade, but I would get a T3i if it was my choice between the two. (I do use the video feature so the swivel screen would be a huge benefit for me)

If getting a new camera at this point the t3i is a no brainer, but people arnt compelled to upgrade from the t2i because it is nearly the same camera...

It depends. T3i is newer but not for everyone. If I didn't need the swivel screen then T2i and spend the rest of the money on another lens.
